16 April 2008 - 100k in new funding!

Friends of Denny Park are pleased to announce a $75,000 contribution from Vulcan Real Estate and a $25,000 contribution from Security Properties that will help create a new children’s play area in Denny Park, one of Seattle’s oldest parks. After ten months of fundraising by volunteers at Friends of Denny Park, Vulcan Real Estate and Security Properties contributions totaling $100,000 will close the funding gap for this initial phase of the renovation project.

“Revitalized public parks and vibrant open space are important parts of sustainable urban neighborhoods, and also align with the community’s vision for the area. We recognize the importance of this children’s play area to the community and wanted to do our part to help Denny Park become a healthy, vibrant, safe place for families to enjoy,” said Ada Healey, vice president of real estate at Vulcan. “At Security Properties we also recognize the importance of such community amenities and are pleased to participate”, said John Orehek of Security.

Park Superintendent Tim Gallagher said Seattle Parks & Recreation will also budget funds in the next biennial Capital Improvement Project for improved lighting for Denny Park.

Friends of Denny Park, with Seattle Parks & Recreation, and Berger Partnership landscape architects have completed schematic designs for the Park’s renovation. Berger Partnership is now under contract and is working on design development drawings. The play area and lighting are the first phase of what will be a three-phase project. Construction of Phase 1 is planned to begin in April and to be completed by September 2008. The community is continuing fundraising for Phases II & III that will include new park furniture and a central plaza.

The Friends of Denny Park steering committee is seeking volunteers with expertise in grant writing, fund raising, and event organizing to help the organization reach its fundraising goals. Your efforts will be rewarded in a revitalized green space, with improved lighting, security, and ADA amenities to our historic park. Prospective volunteers can contact the steering committee chairs via the Web site for more details.

Denny Park began as a land claim by Seattle pioneer David Denny. In 1864 Denny and his wife donated the land to the city as a cemetery. The family drew a new deed dedicating the 6.4 acre property as a city park in 1883. The park is a sea of green surrounded by businesses and the busy arterials, Denny Way and Dexter Ave. Revitalizing this historic and centrally located park will benefit the neighborhood, community, and every citizen to enjoy.

The family drew a new deed dedicating the 6.4 acre property as a city park in 1883. The grave sites were removed at the city’s expense. The park is a sea of green surrounded by businesses and the busy arterials, Denny Way and Dexter Ave. Renovating this historic and centrally located park will benefit the neighborhood and every citizen who uses it.

Friends of Denny Park are holding a September 16th Kick-Off fundraising party. Everyone is invited to attend the event and participate in this exciting project.
